What are the range of difficult/controversial subjects that can be or should be tackled in children and YA lit?

This was a question that I asked on Twitter and Facebook. And here are some of the responses:

    • Kiran Manral Gender stereotypes/death (children)/communalism/religious or racial stereotypes/ sexual exploration vs abuse/bullying/social conscience

    • Sonja Chandrachud Lines are blurring...growing up too soon, too fast...parents need to slow down, only then will we still have something called 'childhood'

    • Jaya Bhattacharji Rose Competitiveness? How about while tackling historical fiction, how far should the writer go in depicting a harsh reality as it was or toning it down for contemporary readers?

    • Jaya Bhattacharji Rose Add anorexia/obesity etc as well to the list?

    • Ananth Padmanabhan Having said all of that - if we need YAs to read and make it a habit, books will need to be rollicking rides!

    • Jaya Bhattacharji Rose I agree Ananth on all points, including discovering authors who write well. But YAs are and have been reading for years. In fact, I have been noticing for some year now that there is a sense of inverted snobbery about reading. This, in spite of growing up in an Internet and information overload age. We now need to create the right matches between content/writers/readers=sales.
