New Delhi: Chiki Sarkar, the former editor in chief of Random House India, has been appointed publisher of Penguin India, the largest English language trade publisher in the subcontinent.
Sarkar has worked with best-selling authors including Jhumpa Lahiri, Anita Desai, Salman Rushdie, Mohammed Hanif, Daniyal Mueenuddin and Rujuta Diwekar.
Before Random House, she worked for Bloomsbury Publishing in London for seven years. She is a graduate of Oxford University.
"We are thrilled that Chiki will be joining Penguin India on the eve of our 25th year. Not only is she incredibly bright, creative and driven but I believe she has the vision and passion to run one of the most exciting and prestigious publishing lists in the world. Sarkar said she was sad to leave Random House India which she said "has not just been a work place but a home for the last five years."
"But I am extremely excited to start a new phase in my life with Penguin India and have the opportunity to work with a wonderful team and with some of the country’s finest writers," Sarkar said.
Penguin Books India is the largest English language trade publisher in the subcontinent. Penguin India began publishing in 1987 with seven titles. Today, the company publishes over 200 titles every year and has an active backlist of over 750 titles.
Known for its strong fiction and narrative non-fiction list, Penguin India has published across virtually every segment including self-help, cookery, reference and quizzing, biography, travel, picture books, business, politics, history, health and fitness, religion and philosophy as well as sports and leisure.
Over the last two decades Penguin India has published almost every major writer and voice in both fiction and non-fiction. Penguin India authors have won virtually every major literary prize. 2012 will mark the 25th anniversary of Penguin India.
